ELK VALLEY RETIRED TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION
NEWSLETTER 2
APRIL 2011
This is a forum for you to introduce yourself to other members and let us
all know what you are doing in your retirement years. The idea of a newsletter
to keep in touch with fellow members was suggested at last year’s “TO
H*** WITH THE BELL” meeting. Mary Menduk and I, Lynda Bird offered
to get it started.

We are in Roatan in Central America. It´s an island off mainland Honduras
We came back as it´s a wonderful place to be if you use bug repellent
and after itch.
Most residents speak English. There are many medical teams from the US donating their spare time here in clinics. The average birthing rate for first baby in the poor areas is 14 and the women often have 3 children by 18. They area all tested for Aids. Some children can´t afford to attend school and that is ridiculous when there are very wealthy people here,
The politics are iffy. The police are often paid off by the drug lords but it is not like Mexico and I hope it never will be.
Our beach is amazing - only 100 yards from our rooms. Friends from Fernie have been coming here for 8 years. I love the snorkeling while Brian is diving for only $25 a time with all the gear included.

I have joined ancestry.ca and am enjoying getting info about my
ancestors although from "Family Trees" some other members have
informed me the info is not always correct. I am doing this for my
own family tree plus my husband's and my sister-in-law's. Was
surprised to see that you can keep adding new trees. I have a tree in
my bunch that I have as a guest that belongs to someone in England.
This person has given me more info from way back because I gave him
my email address. He and I have the same great, great, great
grandfather.
Still enjoying scrapbooking (doing photo albums) very much. Have
been doing some drawing - learning some from Betty Edward's book
"
Drawing From The Right Side of The Brain". Am looking forward to
gardening and my husband is looking forward to golfing (he curled all
winter).
Hopefully, we will hear from a lot more people this time because it
gives the rest of us ideas.

I thoroughly enjoy the state of "retirement"! My volunteer work
includes working at the public library, church music and other events. I
belong to the Nature Club and love going for short and long hikes. Bird watching
is also a big plus in my day and I can identify more birds by sight and sound.
Travelling other than in the summer is great!
